Auto Intensity Control of Street Lights Circuit and Working with Applications

In olden days, streetlights on the roads are controlled manually. But, nowadays street lights are controlled automatically or by emerging automation technology. But one can notice that there is no necessity of high intensity in peak hours that is when there is no traffic and even in the morning time. By reducing the light intensity using LEDs the energy can be conserved. This article discusses the designing of an auto intensity control of street lights using simple electronic and electrical components like LEDs, microcontrollers, working and purpose, and applications of this project.

Auto Intensity Control of Street Lights

Generally, streetlights on the highways are designed with high-intensity lamps that consume more energy and also cannot be changed as per the requirement. Thus, the proposed system overcomes these problems by using LEDs instead of HID lamps in the street light systems. So the light intensity can be changed and controlled according to the needs. An 8051 microcontroller is programmed with instructions to control the light intensity by producing a PWM signal which makes a MOSFET to turn ON the LEDs to get the result. Therefore, the street light intensity increases during the evening time and gradually reduces in late nights and continues again in the morning at 6 am.

The main goal of this project is to control the intensity of street light and also decrease the usage of electricity in the street lights by using LEDs in the place of HID lamps. This project uses a051 microcontroller which generates PWM signals that remind a MOSFET to switch ON the LEDs to achieve an ideal operation.

The hardware and software requirements mainly include a transformer, diodes, resistors, capacitors, LEDs, LEDs, 8051 microcontrollers, crystal, MOSFET, Keil compiler, and embedded c language.

Mostly the lighting up of roads is done through HID (High-Intensity Discharge) lamps, whose energy consumption is high.

The light intensity cannot be controlled according to the requirement. This can be overcome by an alternative method of the lighting system by using LEDs. This project proves the usage of the LEDs as the light source and its adjustable intensity control, according to the obligation. The lifetime of the lights used in this system is more and also consumes less power as compared to the HID lamps. The main purpose of this project is to control the light intensity as per the condition during non-peak hours, which is not possible in HID lamps.

A set of LEDs is used to make a street light and based on the pulse width modulation signals generated, the 8051 microcontroller includes programmable instructions that regulate the light intensity. As per the instructions, the light intensity remains high during the evening. When the traffic on the highways tends to decrease gradually during the night time, the street light intensity also decreases gradually till the morning. It gets totally shut down in the morning 6, and again continues at 6 pm in the evening. The process repeats frequently.

Furthermore, this project can be developed by incorporating it with the solar panel, as it changes the intensity of the solar into equivalent voltage, and this energy is used for highway lights.

As the name suggests it makes use of street lights so simple. Some of the main advantages of them mainly include: no need to control manually, energy-saving, a bunch of LEDs reduces the cost, a lifetime of street lights can be increased, detection of vehicle, good stability in the cold, sensitivity is high, based on the light intensity it works, completely automatic, designing is very simple with components and intelligent street lights.

Thus, this article elaborates on the designing of auto intensity control of the street lights circuit and its working works. This project works properly to switch ON/OFF the street lamps. After designing the project, the street lights using LEDs has been successfully controlled by 8051 microcontrollers. With instructions from the controller, the street lights will be switched ON in the dark places. So finally we can conclude that this circuit can be used on highways between the cities.
