2SC5200 Transistor : Pin Configuration & Its Applications

The 2SC5200 transistor is an NPN polarity-based power transistor, designed to use in general-purpose switching and power amplifier-based applications. This transistor includes three terminals and three layers where terminals are emitter, base & collector and layers are N, P & N. Here, the p doped layer is arranged between two n doped layers. What is 2SC5200 Transistor?

The 2SC5200 is an NPN transistor, used in different AF amplifiers and high power-based audio circuits because of its high collector current and high gain of current. This transistor is manufactured by Toshiba and it is still replaced with TTA5200.

This high-power transistor is accessible in the TO-264 package which is made with epoxy & plastic material for designing different amplifiers. The collector to emitter voltage (VCE) of this transistor is 230V whereas the collector current is 30A. These transistors are used in TVs, mobiles, flip flops, industrial control, etc.

Once these transistors operate through high collector current and switching frequency then they heat up very quickly, thus they are used with a heat sink always. So that the circuit can be protected from overheating.

In most of the amplifier circuit designs, 2SC5200 transistor is used along with its complement like 2SA1943. Similar to Class B amplifiers, most of the amplifiers use a push-pull circuit including two transistors like PNP & NPN. So both the transistors are used together frequently to build high-power-based amplifiers.

How to use 2SC5200 Transistor/Circuit Diagram?

Generally, the audio amplifier is one kind of electronic circuit, used to enhance weak AC or DC signals to a high amplitude range. Amplifiers are used in discrete electronic devices like mono speakers, stereo speakers, audio amplifiers, etc. Here, we are designing an audio amplifier circuit using a 2SC5200 transistor is shown below. The transistor used in this circuit is 2SC5200 which is an NPN power transistor.

This audio amplifier circuit can be built with various electronic components like 2SC5200 NPN power transistor, 0.5 Watt & 8 Ohms loudspeaker, 3.5mm DC male or female jack, 10K potentiometer, 1K resistor, 220uF electrolytic capacitor, 12V/DC power supply, battery clips, jumper wires, and breadboard.

The working of audio amplifier circuit with 2SC5200 transistor is; the input provided to this circuit is audio input which is taken from a smartphone or a personal computer.

A 10K potentiometer is used to control the level of input voltage and a 220uF capacitor is used to block the input signal’s DC component by allowing the AC component only. Here, this AC signal works as a control signal toward the base terminal of the transistor.


The amplified output from the collector terminal of the transistor moves toward the negative terminal of a speaker, whereas the positive terminal is connected to a DC power supply with a DC male power jack. To protect this transistor from overheating, you can utilize a heat sink optionally.

Thus, 2SC5200 is a high-power NPN transistor that is applicable in AF amplifiers as well as high power-based audio circuits due to high current gain. When this transistor is used continuously with heavy loads, then its performance may reduce significantly due to heat, so a heat sink is used to overcome this problem.
