Artificial Skin Invented for Robots by National University of Singapore

Artificial skin for robots like AECS (Asynchronous Coded Electronic Skin) may have a touch sensor which is equivalent to otherwise better than the skin of a human. This skin works as an artificial nervous system for the robots. The AECS was designed by the NUS (National University of Singapore) researchers’ team, and it has gained a good response. These can be connected with any sort of sensor’s skin layer to work efficiently like artificial skin.

The innovation of this was attained by the entire team of the “Materials Science & Engineering” department by the National University of Singapore For better interaction with humans, these robots use a sense of touch. Asst. Professor Tee was explained that at present robots cannot sense the objects extremely well. He is the one who has been working over AECS for providing robotic devices for a good sense of touch.


Asst. Professor Tee said that “The working of the human nervous system is very efficient, which works continually toward the extent that we frequently take it for approved. If we can observe how our organic system functions, we can improve the marvelous advancements within the robotics field wherever artificial skins are mostly applied.

Artificial skin can sense touches over 1,000 times quicker than the human nervous system. It is capable of separating physical contacts among different sensors in below 60 ns. ACES based skin can also precisely recognize the texture, shape, & rigidity of objects in 10 ms which is more than 10 times faster than the eye blinking. This can be allowed by the high-reliability & ACES system’s capture speed.

The main objective of ACES is to attain high robustness toward the physical break, as they approach into the common physical contact through the surroundings. Not like the existing system used to connect sensors within accessible electronic skins, and these sensors can be linked to an ordinary electrical conductor where every sensor works separately. This permits electronic skin to maintain operation as long as there is the connection among the conductor & sensor to make them less weak to break

The main characteristics of AECS are simple wiring system & remarkable, which will make possible to increase intelligent artificial skins used for the applications like AI (Artificial Intelligence) in robots, HMIs, and prosthetic devices. The connection of ACES with any type of sensor skin layer can be done easily. By using this AECS, we can develop more smart robots to perform tragedy recovery tasks.
