Time of Flight Sensor by STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has launched a new invention in sensor with high-performance proximity as well as ranging sensors. The Time of Flight Sensor is based on FlightSense ToF (Time of Flight) technology.  Not like other proximity sensors, these sensors use simple infrared (IR) technology to measure the power of the signal and it can be influenced by the reflectivity of the object.

Time of Flight Sensors is used to measure the distance toward the object directly based on the time for discharged photons to be reflected, allowing precise distance changing in spite of the characteristics of the object’s surface.

FlightSense™ products are enclosed in an all-in-one small module. This module includes the laser driver, emitter & the SPAD (single-photon avalanche diode) light receiver; this will offer unequaled ranging reliability as well as speed.

The advanced Time of Flight Sensor solution unites the advantages of the ST’s an exclusive single-photon avalanche diode technology (SPAD). This sensor has some features like good internal image processing, high-volume packaging services. This sensor involves in a wide range of applications which require low power utilization, the system cost is competitive, it measures long distances with high-speed, accurate, simple incorporation with stretchy mechanical design.

FlightSenseTM technology, as well as ranging sensors, are utilized within a host of application regions which include the following. Proximity detecting, video assist, the autofocus of camera, service robots, vacuum cleaners, cliff detection, wall following toys, avoidance of collision, landing support for drones as well as hover.

These are used in home appliances for detecting ambient light, identification of gesture for light management, automatic doors control. The mode of unique power reduction allows an innovative auto-sleep or wake-on-approach utilizes cases for personal computers, IoT devices, and notebooks.

Furthermore, the Time of Flight Sensor is used in toilets or washroom automation, valves otherwise soap dispensers, in vending machines for package counting, and smart-shelf systems.

These sensors come with complete package documentation which includes source code application programming interface (API) software. This software is well-matched with processors as well as microcontrollers. The development of application software & the physical incorporation for customer devices like breakout boards, X-NUCLEO expansion board, and allied development ecosystem is easy.
